Water Tower Renovation (COMPLETED) – 14 Oct 2024

The Buccaneer Bay water tower renovation is complete. The water system was returned to normal operation on the afternoon of 14 October.

What does this mean for residents?

Landscape/Lawn Watering Restrictions

All watering restrictions are removed.

Lessons Learned

During the renovation the District had to purchase new water pressure diffusers which were a significant upgrade from previous diffusers.

Previously we had used diffusers loaned to us by companies doing work on our water system. These were older diffusers which continually released water to maintain pressure because they did not have built in pressure sensors. Our new water pressure diffusers with built in pressure sensors in combination with our variable speed wells make it possible to maintain very even water pressure under high water use without wasting thousands of gallons of water per day.

Yard Waste Recycling and Bin Swap Requests – 8 Aug 2024

We regret to inform you that Gretna Sanitation is currently unable to recycle yard waste from our district. Despite their efforts, the high volume of regular trash mixed with yard waste has necessitated sending the material to the landfill.

Currently, 198 residents have yard waste bins, but only a small number are regularly using them. For Gretna Sanitation to continue recycling, the service must be economically viable.

To improve the situation, Gretna will be monitoring yard waste bin usage over the next few months. If usage increases and the yard waste is consistently clean, they will resume recycling. However, if the contamination issue persists, we may need to consider discontinuing the service or possibly adjusting the pickup frequency to every other week.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping yard waste separate from regular trash and will keep you updated on any further changes.

The last date for trash bin configuration changes without being charged a fee is 31 Aug 2024.

Thank you for your understanding.

Utility Rate Change – 2 Aug 2024

We want to inform you of changes to the SID 5 Utilities Fee Ordinance, which will affect your utility bill starting in July 2024. These changes will be reflected on the bill due August 15, 2024.

Effective July 1, 2024

  1. Wastewater Treatment Plant Debt Service Fee:
This fee will increase from $16.00 to $21.00 per month. This adjustment is necessary to cover the cost of the state bond used to expand the capacity of our Wastewater Treatment Plant, improve system monitoring and replace the Sterling Ct lift station.

By law, the cost of the state bond must be shared equally by all customers of the system. This project was started pre-pandemic and original cost estimates of the project would not have required an increase the debt service fee. Unfortunately, the cost of the project sky rocketed post pandemic forcing an increase in the fee.
  2. Trash Fee:
A new fee of $22.95 per month will be assessed for each active water account with a habitable residence.

Please note that there will be no changes to the current water or sewer usage rates. The maintenance costs on the system have started leveling off and we are planning on any usage rate increases anytime soon.
