There is one public school district that supports the Buccaneer Bay subdivision, Plattsmouth Community School District. The district operates an early childhood center for 3- and 4-year-olds, two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an alterative high school.
Also serving the Plattsmouth area is Saint John the Baptist School, a Roman Catholic private school providing pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Saint John's is a member of the National Catholic Educational Association.
PCSD has the twenty-third largest student enrollment in the state. For the 2005-06 school year the student enrollment was approximately 1,775 students. The student enrollment is large enough to offer a variety of curricular offerings, but small enough to avoid the complexities and red tape of larger districts. There is ample opportunity for students to be involved in curricular and co-curricular activities.
During the 2005-06 school year the school employed 130 teachers, three counselors, three library media specialists, eleven administrators, four nurses, two behavior interventionists, one psychologist, five speech pathologists, and 150 support staff. The staff is dedicated, professional, and cares about individual students and their development. The Board of Education is a 9-member board and typically meets on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Administrative Center, 1912 East Highway 34.
Plattsmouth High School is located at 1916 Highway 34. The building was constructed in 1996. The High School offers over 140 courses to meet the diverse needs of the students seeking higher education, military service, or immediate employment upon graduation. The High School contains a 600-seat auditorium, two gymnasiums, five computer labs, and an industrial technology lab. Extra-curricular programs are offered in music, dramatics, athletics, academic competitions, forensics, and club activities.
Plattsmouth Middle School is located at 1724 8th Avenue. The building was completely renovated in 1997. The Middle School provides a period of transition for students in grades five through eight as they move out of the self-contained Elementary School to the departmentalized High School. The average ratio of students to instructional staff is 1/14. Each student is a member of homeroom or teacher advisory group.
Plattsmouth Elementary School was built in 1996. It is located at the corner of 18th Street and 8th Avenue in Plattsmouth, and enrolls about 575 students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Classroom sizes range from 18-20 for kindergarten and first grades to a maximum of 23-25 for third and fourth grades. Reading, writing, and number skills provides a strong foundation for students. This foundation expands through an integrated program of science, social studies, health, music, physical education, art, library, and technology. Support services are provided to meet the individual needs of students.
